Helping Investors with Financial Planning (extra reading: not in the Sept 2026 workbook) for NISM certification
Financial planning turns vague wishes into funded goals. A distributor who can do the basic arithmetic of goals, inflation and SIPs, and who profiles risk properly, gives investors a plan rather than a product.

Key formulas
| Emergency fund | Monthly expenses (incl. EMIs) × 3 to 6 |
|---|---|
| PV of annual contribution | Contribution × [1 − (1 + r)^−n] ÷ r |
| Future value | PV × (1 + r)^n |
| Present value | FV ÷ (1 + r)^n |
| FV of monthly SIP (start of month) | P × [((1 + i)^n − 1) ÷ i] × (1 + i), i = monthly rate |
| SIP needed | FV × i ÷ [((1 + i)^n − 1) × (1 + i)] |
Concepts explained
Future and present value
Future value grows today's money at a rate; present value discounts a future amount back to today.
What it means
- FV = PV × (1 + r)^n.
- PV = FV ÷ (1 + r)^n.
- Use inflation to grow goal costs and expected return to discount.
- ₹20 lakh course today; 8% education inflation; 15 years
- 20 × 1.08¹⁵ = 20 × 3.172
Answer: ≈ ₹63.4 lakh
- ₹50 lakh in 10 years; 10% return
- 50 ÷ 1.1¹⁰ = 50 ÷ 2.594
Answer: ≈ ₹19.3 lakh
SIP needed for a goal
The SIP needed = FV × i ÷ [((1 + i)^n − 1) × (1 + i)], with i the monthly return and n the number of months.
What it means
- Longer time or higher return → smaller SIP.
- Inflate the goal first, then compute the SIP.
- ₹50 lakh in 15 years at 12% a year
- i = 1%, n = 180
- (1.01)^180 ≈ 5.996
Answer: ≈ ₹9,900 a month
Human life value
HLV is the present value of an earner's future income contribution to the family, used to size life cover.
What it means
- Contribution = income − personal expenses (− taxes).
- Discount over remaining working years.
- Contribution ₹9 lakh a year, 20 years, 8%
- Annuity factor ≈ 9.818
Answer: ≈ ₹88.4 lakh
Risk capacity vs risk tolerance
Risk capacity is the ability to bear losses; risk tolerance is the willingness to accept them. Plan for the lower of the two.
What it means
- Capacity: horizon, income stability, dependants, wealth, liabilities.
- Tolerance: attitude, past behaviour in market falls.
Cash flow and net worth
Cash flow shows money in and out over a period; net worth is assets minus liabilities at a point in time.
What it means
- Surplus = income − expenses − EMIs.
- Savings ratio = savings ÷ income.
- Assets ₹60 lakh
- Liabilities ₹28 lakh
Answer: ₹32 lakh
Memory tricks
Establish relationship → gather data → analyse → recommend → implement → monitor.
Goals should be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound.
Emergency fund = 3–6 months of essential expenses in liquid, safe options.
Risk capacity is ability; risk tolerance is willingness; use the lower.
Starting early sharply reduces the SIP needed for a goal.

Q1. In the same family, the savings ratio is
- 45%
- 53%
- 30%
- 23%
Show answer
Answer: (3) 30%
45,000 ÷ 1,50,000 = 30%.
Q2. Why should young families set up nominations and wills early, even though transfer seems far away?
- Because SEBI requires every mutual fund investor to file a will with the AMC
- Because wills reduce returns
- Death can happen at any time; nominations and wills make the transfer smooth
- Because nominations are meant only for retirees
Show answer
Answer: (3) Death can happen at any time; nominations and wills make the transfer smooth
Estate planning protects dependants whenever needed.
Q3. If the expected return on a goal SIP rises (other things equal), the SIP needed
- Rises
- Falls
- Stays the same
- Doubles
Show answer
Answer: (2) Falls
Higher returns do more of the work.
